Christchurch City Shopping to Resume Soon

Christchurch's City Mall still looks like a construction zone, but organisers insist it will be ready for Cup and Show Week in six weeks.

The media were given a tour of the central Christchurch red zone yesterday, including the City Mall, where about half the buildings have been demolished and work is feverishly under way for a reopening.

Workers were repairing the facade of the still-empty Ballantynes department store, while red shipping containers were being installed in dusty, vacant lots.

The Restart the Heart initiative plans to use more than 60 shipping containers to build 27 temporary shops by October 29, providing a central-city retail hub for Cup and Show Week.
