Majestic Church

Location
Durham St, Christchurch

Structex provided structural assessment, strengthening, and design as part of retrofit of an industrial building complex into a church facility for the Majestic Church.

We also provided temporary works design and seismic restraint of stage equipment. The church facilities consist of the main auditorium with a seated capacity of over 300 people, green room areas behind stage, a youth space/gym area, kitchen space, outdoor green space, and a connecting foyer and corridors. The site covers an area of approximately 3,200m² including carparking.

Buildings were strengthened to 100% of current code loadings.

Work to the main auditorium included a new steel frame supporting the new GRC (glass fibre reinforced concrete) street façade, strengthened frames to support stage lighting and acoustic systems, and a new plant deck built over the adjacent building in order to house ventilation units. Due to the liquefaction prone ground under the buildings, new slabs and slab overlays were designed to allow for loss of support and differential settlement in order to reduce future earthquake damage.

Work was done in three stages; demolition and/or strengthening of the buildings, construction of new structure, followed by the kitchen and site works.

This project received a Silver Award in the Tourism and Leisure Category of the 2020 NZ Commercial Project Awards.

This property was also a 2021 Canterbury Architecture Awards Winner at the New Zealand Institute of Architects awards:
