Motu Bridge Demolition

Location
SH2, Bay of Plenty

Structex was engaged to design the temporary works to enable both the construction of the new Motu bridge, and then the subsequent demolition of the original 1920s single-lane bridge.

This involved a creative self-supporting cradle system which removed the need for substantial propping when casting the piers, as well as lifting plans and careful cross-reviews of designer and contractor methodologies. A key challenge which was overcome was ensuring the stability of the original structure when parts were being cut and removed to maintain a safe site for those carrying out the demolition works.
